Persian Calligraphy
Community auntie and artist Parivash teaches the basic strokes of nastaliq – most commonly used for Persian poetry but shared across Arabic, Dari, Pashto & Urdu letters.
Our workshop sessions first start with a presentation on the general history of calligraphy across cultures. Then, through guided practice, participants write a message in Persian to exercise the basic strokes of lettering for calligraphy. All supplies are provided for use during the session.
No experience in these alphabets, Farsi, or nastaliq script is required!
About our Artist
Parivash Afradi
Born and raised in Iran, Parivash has always been drawn to beautiful writing. At a young age, one of her teachers noticed her interest and recognized her natural talent for calligraphy. The teacher encouraged Parivash’s mother to enroll her with the Anjoman-e Khoshnevisan Iran (Iranian Calligraphers Association), where she began studying calligraphy more seriously.
Throughout her life, calligraphy appeared in different chapters—sometimes as a central part of her life and sometimes quietly in the background while she pursued other interests and responsibilities. Eventually, she moved to the United States and built a professional life in biology. Although her career took her in a very different direction, her connection to Persian and Arabic letters remained part of who she was.
With almost 15 years of professional calligraphy collaborations, she is excited to bring her talents to more people.
