Rhythm Workshop with Reckless Darling
This rhythm workshop is designed to help musicians develop a strong connection with their inner clock through the study of constructed rhythms and creative methods of working with the metronome.
This is a beginner-friendly workshop and the complex concepts will be presented in a way that is easy to grasp and apply. If you have been looking for a way to try out your chops in a drum circle, you’ve come to the right place! The rhythms we are learning come from the Arabian Peninsula and have been transcribed from the book The Percussion Ensemble of the Arabian Peninsula written by Tarek Yamani & Rony Afif. Music sheets will be provided for you to keep!
This workshop is geared towards percussion instruments. Students are encouraged to bring their own drums/percussion. Some percussion instruments will also be available at the studio.
Block Printing Workshop
This 3-hour session will walk you through the basics of linoleum block printing – including designing, carving, and printing original prints. All skill levels are welcome and all materials will be provided for use in session!
Grounded in the traditions of printmaking, participants will be encouraged to reflect on memories of home/homeland and the nostalgic moments or objects that keep our cultures alive. We hope this space will be one of collective artmaking, communal healing, and cultural preservation!
Persian Calligraphy Workshop
Join BIYA BIYA as we welcome a community auntie and artist to lead us in a Persian Calligraphy Workshop! Come learn the basic strokes of nastaliq – most commonly used for Persian poetry but shared across Arabic, Dari, Pashto & Urdu letters. No experience in these alphabets or nastaliq script is required, and it is open to non-native Persian speakers. The session will first start with a presentation on the general history of calligraphy across cultures.
Then, through guided practice, participants write a message in Persian to exercise the basic strokes of lettering for calligraphy.
All supplies are provided for use during the session.
